School media - press, radio, television, internet : on example of regions of Olomouc and Ústí nad Labem

Diploma thesis "School media - press, radio, television, internet: on example of regions of Olomouc and Ústí nad Labem" deals with school media production of pupils and students of primary and secondary education focusing on the Czech environment. The whole issue is framed within media literacy, media education. Moreover, the interpretation accents with its direction of production. The most important chapters of historical-theoretical part introduce the outline of the school media development from the beginning till nowadays. Practical part characterizes school media in the regions of Olomouc and Ústí nad Labem. The research survey is mainly focused on the occurrence of school media production, forms of their outputs and characteristics of individual types of school media. What is more, the survey is also interested in current trends in publishing of school and class magazines and their theme and genre profile. Survey summarizes reasons, which impedes realization of school media production. Finally, on account of compile findings and data, it deduces a school media typology, criteria of their possible categorisation and includes them into the media system. School media create specific territory of media landscape. However in certain circumstances, they can be considered as organisational media, which forms a part of civil media sector, or as alternative media. School media create from school peculiar type of public sphere too. School media production has quite long tradition in the Czech environment. First school media have a form of school or class magazines, which have appeared in the mid of 19th century. At the beginning, they were made from initiative of pupils and students. Their closeness to school has been changed and influenced by school experience and political situation through time. As a result, publishing of school magazines has been supported, tolerated, afflicted, and subordinated to supervision. Production media output as a part of incipient form of media education has not appeared until 80s of 20th century. The spectra of school media has extended after the November 1989. Firstly, the organisation of independent school radio and television broadcasts has started, besides school and class magazines and occasional student's broadcasts in school radio. The thesis focuses on school media that are created by students and teachers at schools. The project's introduction briefly defines basic terms and main types of school media. Specifics of the single school media and their content are shortly described. Following chapters are devoted to history and development of school media in the few past years at our territory. The theory part lists the most frequent topics chosen for school media along with factors of motivation that influence media creation. Part of the thesis deals with selected school documents, specifically 'Educational Framework Program' where stress is put on possibilities to use school media during the lessons of media education at elementary and secondary grammar schools. Second part of the thesis focuses on a specific case study where results from the research are presented. In the research it selfone type of school media, school TV of Secondary Grammar School in Pribram, is deeply analysed. The goal of the research is to investigate the course of preparation, planning and realization of the school reporting. At tempt of the thesis is also to describe what kind of students are becoming school reporters and why, last but not least what is the technical equipment of the school and what is the response of the school media audience.

Shool broadcasting as a tool for the developement of the media leteracy

The bachelor thesis School broadcasting as a tool for the developement of the media literacy is dedicated to the creation of the school radio in the context of the media literacy. In particular, the bachelor thesis deals with the role of media production activities in the media education and their expected outputs, with an emphasis on the school radio. In the theoretical part of the thesis is first of all characterised the consolidation of the media education in the Czech eduacational system with the focus on the concept learning by doing. Subsequently, the thesis is dedicated to the school radio, its history and the technical and personal aspect of its operation. Besides, it contemplates the problem of the methodical support for teachers and school radio creators. Moreover, a brief description of chosen foreign projects concerning methodical support is brought up. The practical part of the thesis consists the data obtained from interviews with redactions of school radios in schools in the Czech republic. It is mainly focused on the practical side of the operation of the school radio and on competences that students can gain by participating on the creation of the school radio. In the end, these competences and experiences are compared with expected outputs of production activities in media education.

Creating a school newspaper as a means to promote media literacy

This dissertation deals with the theme of the school magazines in grammar schools. Specifically, it examines the influence of independent school magazines production on the development of pupils' media literacy. The thesis is divided into two parts - the theoretical one and empirical one. Theoretical part briefly defines the term media literacy, explains the growth in use of the term and describes its anchoring in the Czech educational system. It pays attention to definition of media education in educational documents of the Czech Republic and further talks about possibilities of its inclusion into classes and its expected impacts. It briefly compares media production within guided media education and independent school media production created by pupils itselves. The second part is devoted to the survey carried out by three editorial boards of Pilsen school magazines that emerged from pupils' initiative. It explores functions and processes of magazine running, shows differences in each editorial board, its incentive, goals, author's primary expectations etc. Further, the research analyzes the contributions of school magazines independent work to development of pupils' media literacy.
